The story behind SnapFlyer

I'm Yannick, the creator of SnapFlyer and a long-time frog keeper myself. I used to dread feeding time. Shaking fruit flies out of setups that relied on expensive specialty lids and cups was a nightmare—flies everywhere, wasted culture, and a spouse who was (rightfully) furious as my frog room took over.

After 300+ iterations and a small mountain of prototypes tested on countless cultures, I built SnapFlyer: a reusable lid that snaps onto slim drink cups for clean, spout-controlled feeding. Every detail counts tremendously to me, and I'm still refining it based on feedback from serious herpers and new frog and spider hobbyists alike.

In 2026, culturing fruit flies doesn't have to be costly or messy.

  • No more escapees.Total control over every pour.
  • Save money.Traditional specialty lids have their advantages for large-scale fruit fly farms or pet stores that transport flies—but for average home culture they're often not ideal. Use affordable everyday drink cups with SnapFlyer instead.

Frequently asked questions

A few practical details from the keeper who built SnapFlyer for their own racks first.

I hate washing cups. Do I need to wash anything with SnapFlyer?

SnapFlyer is modular by design. The cups are standard, affordable drink cups, so you can throw them away after each culture—no scraping or scrubbing. The lid itself is reusable, but the inner surface is intentionally smooth, so a quick rinse under tap water is all it needs. The vent pads are where fruit flies usually contaminate, and those are disposable too: just use fresh vent pads for each new culture.

Will it work with the cups I already have?

For keepers who want zero tolerance for fruit fly leakage, the popular taller 32 oz drink cups are the best fit: they give adults and larvae a better humidity gradient. One trade-off: these are cold-drink cups, so you can't pour boiling water into them to mix media directly. We're also building another SnapFlyer model for traditional 32 oz cups that are hot-water compatible—for those who mix media in the cup. If you're unsure which cups work, contact us —we can point you to the cups we design and test with.

Does throwing cups away every time create too much waste?

Traditional specialty lids make sense for large-scale fruit fly operations or pet stores that need to move and ship flies. For the average home keeper, in the long term they're often more costly and more of a hassle than necessary—because the fabric is permanently integrated and not intended for repeatable use. With SnapFlyer's patent pending solution you reuse the durable lid and only discard the lightweight cup and vent pad per culture—many keepers find this cleaner and less wasteful for their setup.
